Quote Of The Day

Artists don't talk about art. Artists talk about work. If I have anything to say to young writers, it's stop thinking of writing as art. Think of it as work.

Here's my favorite artistic quote.

"The best interview of Vincent Gallo was done by Vincent Gallo. The best articles about Vincent Gallo were written by Vincent Gallo, the best acting performance of Vincent Gallo was directed and edited by Vincent Gallo from a screenplay written by Vincent Gallo, even the best photographs of Vincent Gallo were taken by Vincent Gallo. So you see, this is painful for me." - Vincent Gallo

It's nice to see him opening up more...he's always been so shy in the past.

Fuck that.
Thinking writing is work makes it feel like work.
I prefer to pretend I am Creating.

Queenie,

For the minority of us who are not "pretending" to create, it is work. Let me take that back, I can only speak for myself. It doesn't mean it's any less rewarding or it's not enjoyable but what I am discussing on this blog is creating and making a living at it. That is writing. Not the pretense of writing but actually sitting down every day and cranking out pages that I deem worthy of someone investing their hard earned dollar in. Not the sitting in Starbucks with a Mocha Frappuccino and my iBook fired up waiting to be noticed but writing something hopefully I won't be embarrassed of in five years. If that’s the kind of writing you’re talking about than great for you that you don’t see it as work. Great for you that it is that effortless. Some of us aren’t that blessed. I work hard to make my writing the best I think it can be. If it eventually is acquired and someone wants to invest and make a film from my screenplay I have no intention of wasting people’s countless hours, dollars and time to be dicking around with a pile of dogshit. So with regards and respect to Paddy Chayefsky’s understanding of his own skills as a writer, no, I’m not going to fuck that.
